Smart Learning: Forensic Science at University of New Haven

A High-Tech Learning Advantage
By Su Clauson-Wicker

forensicsCue the music: Whoooo are you? Who Who?   Who Who? I really want to know…

Students at the University of New Haven want to know, too, especially when it comes to expanding their knowledge about crime scene investigation. A surge of interest, plus a high-tech learning facility, is why Forensic Science has become one of the most popular majors on campus.

Getting into the right program and gaining experience at a leading crime laboratory is crucial to building a career in forensics and the University of New Haven’s Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences is just the place to begin.

The program was founded by the internationally renowned Henry C. Lee, who has been involved such high profile cases as the O.J. Simpson investigation, the JonBenet Ramsey murder, and the Chandra Levy investigation. Lee and other faculty remain professionally active and current in the field.

In 2010, UNH completed the new Henry C. Lee Institute, equipped with high-tech classrooms, forensics museum, and virtual crime scene labs where students step into a crime scene and experience in three dimensions the details of an actual, historical murder.

Other new technology available include: ground-penetrating radar for locating bodies; a high-intensity laser to determine a bullet’s trajectory; and portable vapor detection instruments to analyze chemical and biological matter.

The facility also has a cutting edge forensic crisis command center where UNH experts connect by satellite with police and other agencies to examine evidence beamed to them — thus providing help as if they were physically at the crime scene.

Degree Programs
Undergraduate Degrees: Forensic Science, B.S.
Graduate Degrees: Forensic Science, M.S., Ph.D.

See For Yourself

Students interested in the Forensic Science major can sign up for an enhanced visit for a tour of the facility. “UNH provides an amazing Enhanced Visit experience when prospective families visit our campus,” says Admissions Counselor/Coordinator of Social Media and Online Recruitment Zack Rosen.

The enhanced campus visit program allows prospective students the opportunity to get an up-close look at the forensic science program and their facilities. Special presentations, tours of the classrooms, and meetings with faculty are all part of the visit. Enhanced visits are held throughout the academic year; registration is required.

If you can’t schedule an Enhanced Visit, UNH can also arrange for you to meet forensic science faculty members and tour the facilities during a traditional campus visit. It’s best to register ahead, so the admissions staff can accommodate your requests. Call 203.932.7319 or e-mail to arrange a visit.

The University of New Haven is a medium-sized, private university located in suburban New Haven, Connecticut, overlooking the Long Island Sound. The university offers nearly 100 undergraduate majors to its 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
