Smart College Visit: Being Gluten Free in College

#CampusChat focuses on choosing a college based on dietary needs and living with celiac disease

BLACKSBURG, VA,  –  Would you choose a college based on dining hall menus?  For the thousands of teens living with celiac disease, that frivolous sounding question may make the difference between healthy lifestyle and one that can do permanent damage to their bodies.

Smart College Visit is tackling this important issue during National Celiac Awareness Month by providing information and resources for parents and college-bound teens with celiac so that they can more easily take celiac disease management into consideration when choosing a college and making plans for living heathly lifestyles while at college.

To kick off the topic, Smart College visit will host Wendy Gregory Kaho (@midlife_celiac), blogger and college mom with two children who have celiac, during #CampusChat at 9pm EST on Wednesday, May 9.

Wendy shares her story on SmartCollegeVisit.com of her teens’ college search and how they prepared for living gluten free in college.

According to the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center, “Celiac disease is an inherited autoimmune disorder that affects the digestive process of the small intestine. When a person who has celiac disease consumes gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley, the individual’s immune system responds by attacking the small intestine and inhibiting the absorption of important nutrients into the body. Undiagnosed and untreated, celiac disease can lead to the development of other autoimmune disorders, as well as osteoporosis, infertility, neurological conditions and in rare cases, cancer.”

#CampusChat is in its 3rd year of providing informative and engaging college admissions Twitter chats each Wednesday night at 9pm EST.   #CampusChat is open to the public for participation.
