Visiting colleges is touted by college admission experts far and wide as the best way to determine the best college fit. How many colleges to visit and when usually comes down to budgets and schedules. In other words, there is no magic number or absolute best time but, at the very least, visiting a college before you accept an offer of admission is strongly encouraged.

When you do visit, make the most of your campus visit by visiting a class, meeting students enrolled at the college and asking the right questions. Take advantage of every opportunity the school offers to learn as much as you and also make time to explore campus on your own. Eating in the dining hall or student center — where ever students hang out — it also recommended. This is a great way to get a feel for what the campus atmosphere is like. People watching can tell you a lot about the community and culture.

There are a few don’ts when you visit, too, but it all comes down to asking yourself this question: Can I see myself here for the next four years?
