Scholarship Mom #145: Know the WHY

Scholarship Mom Tip 145: Know the WHY - wood block WHYCompanies and organizations offering college scholarship money to students have a few different reasons for creating, organizing, and running scholarship competitions and students need to know the WHY before applying.

Know the WHY before you APPLY

For most businesses, the main reasons for offering scholarship money are:

To get the word out about a business, show good will, and as a result, ultimately profit from the buzz created when the scholarship is shared, talked about, and seen by potential customers or future members.

Students who are aware of these reasons will have a leg up on their competition if they creatively use the mission statement of the company offering the scholarship in their essays and write about how they share common ground with the goals of the organization and its founders.

Students should always look for the “About Us” section on each website of the business offering the scholarship and become familiar with the background of the company or organization before writing the essay and applying for the award. A few minutes of research can make a huge difference in how the scholarship judges see a student as being the best candidate to represent the business and bring students one step closer to winning as much money for college as possible.
