Explore UNH: A New Campus Visitor's Guide for University of New Haven

In response to the growing popularity of mobile devices, University of New Haven today introduced Explore UNH, a complete mobile guide for prospective students, alumni, and visitors to campus.

“Students expect an innovative, progressive campus like University of New Haven to have a strong Unh_iphone mobile presence” commented Kevin Phillips, Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management.  “Explore UNH was designed with our prospective students in mind and showcases our university beautifully.”

Explore UNH provides relevant information about attending University of New Haven, including majors, student life, residence halls, dining, and mobile forms to receive additional information.  The app also serves as an on-campus guide by providing directions for parking, building-to-building walking directions, history and information on each building and campus locale.  It also is a tool to help prospective students apply to UNH and explore their future lives on campus.

The Explore UNH mobile guide is divided into five categories: Welcome, Visit, Apply, Explore, and Connect.   Each section was carefully crafted to highlight UNH and allow the admissions department to be with a prospective candidate prior to and after their campus visit.  The mobile guide is also ideal for visiting alumni and conference goers to familiarize themselves with the campus.

Explore UNH was published by Smart College Visit, Inc, in partnership with University of New Haven and is available free of charge in the iTunes and Google Play Stores.

Use Goby Family Fun Finder on College Visits

by Mary Dixon Lebeau

Road_to_college We have always been a traveling family. But this year, we became a family torn in two directions. After all, there is just so much time we can take away from home.

Recently, when it comes to scheduling our travel time, visits to colleges have become a priority. After all, we have two – count ‘em, two – sons who are making decisions about where to take their next academic steps. One, a high school junior, is looking for a college that will allow him to pursue a degree in law enforcement. The other recently graduated our local community college (Gloucester County College) and would like to complete his degree in a college close to home.

Sounds relatively simple, right? But then add to the mix two children who are years away from college age, but still want to go along on the getaway. What would work for everyone? How could we help our boys get the most out of our college visits – and still keep the younger kids entertained?

With our limited vacation time, my husband and I have been trying to make these visits into family vacations as well. While one of us accompanies the future collegiate to the open houses, campus tours, mixers and meetings at his prospective school, the other accompanies the other children (ages 14and 8) to local attractions and events. This way, we get to know the school while getting a real feel for the community as well. (And bonus – our college-bound son gets to take all the time he wants visiting campus, knowing his siblings are happily out of sight!)

This plan made sense. It also sounded like a headache. But then we found Goby.com. This new travel search engine allowed us to simply type in our destination and search through its menu of things to do locally.

Narrow down the search for “Family Fun,” “Sightseeing and Tours,” “Arts and Culture” andother areas of interest from Goby.com’s menu of choices. Then a slew of things to do – targeted to your requirements and preferences – appear magically on your phone or computer.

For example, my transfer student wanted to spend the afternoon at Rowan University. Rowan, noted for its engineering and education programs, is located in Glassboro, NJ, practically equi-distance between Philadelphia and Atlantic City. When we received his itinerary, I saw we’d have three hours to entertain the younger kids while he toured the dorms, visited an advisor, and attended a extracurricular activities program. I simply plugged “Glassboro NJ” into the Goby.com app on my iPhone. That very afternoon, the kids and I could:

These were just three of the over 100 choices we had for that particular weekend. While my son and my husband explored Rowan, my kids and I were enjoying live music and perusing the vendors at the Appel Arts and Music Fair. Thanks go Goby.com!

On the Go in Pennsylvania with Goby Travel App

Photo Checking out the dorms. Meeting with college reps. Touring the campus. Maybe even attending a mixer or other social hour for prospective students.

There’s so much to do and see when you’re visiting a college or university. But in the frenzy of squeezing it all in, it can be easy to forget to schedule in some down-time for you and your college student in-the-making.

What’s more, while it’s important to check out a prospective college, it’s just as important to get a feel for the local community and nearby attractions. After all, your child will be spending four years here, so doesn’t it make sense to investigate what else the community offers in the way of off-campus culture, recreation and leisure time activities?

Thanks to the new travel search engine Goby © you can do just that. Simply type in your destination or use Goby’s interactive map and then choose from its menu of things to do, like “family fun”, “entertainment and nightlife”, “arts and culture” and “sightseeing and tours." Better yet, download Goby’s © fun feed for your iPhone before you hit the road.

That’s just what we did on a recent trip to Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, home to Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. Situated just off Interstate 80, this college town in the Central Susquehanna River Valley is an easy two to three-hour drive from New York City, Philadelphia or Baltimore.

Aficionados of that quintessential American ritual  — the agricultural fair — will likely have heard of the Bloomsburg State Fair.  Held each year in late September this is the largest fair in Pennsylvania so, if you’re planning your visit during fair week, you’d be wise to book your hotel reservations well in advance. But, in addition to the fair, there’s plenty of other family fun in the area:

  • Downtown Bloomsburg boasts an assortment of restaurants, small retailers and fast-food joints. Our favorites? The Bloomsburg Diner on East Main Street, for its breakfast omelets and burgers. For die-hard New Yorkers like me, there’s even a decent bagel shop — Bloomin’ Bagels on East Main Street.
  • If it’s local community theater you love, then check out Bloomsburg’s Theater Ensemble.  Since 1978 this non-profit has offered live theater and arts education for kids and their families.
  • A short drive away in Centre Hall, PA, is Penn’s Cave and Wildlife Park . For less than $25 per person you can take a one-hour guided tour by motorboat through America’s only all-water limestone cavern and marvel at the stalactites, stalagmites and other wonders of this natural landmark.

So the next time you’re headed out on yet another college visit road trip, check out Goby © for family fun no matter where your travels take you.
